natyadarpana sutra (sloka 46 to 50 - tra

Translation

विलासो धूननं रोधः सान्त्वनं वर्णसंहृतिः। नर्मनर्मद्युतिस्तापः स्युरेतानि यथारुचि।।४६।।

vilāso dhūnanaṃ rodhaḥ sāntvanaṃ varṇasaṃhṛtiḥ| narmanarmadyutistāpaḥ syuretāni yathāruci||46||

Vilāsa, Dhūnana, Rodha, Sāntvana, Varṇasaṃhṛti, Narma, Narmadyuti and Tāpa are to be kept according to the interest.


पुष्पं प्रगमनं वज्रमुपन्यासोपसर्पणम्। पञ्चावश्यमथाङ्गानि प्रतिमुखैः त्रयोदश।।४७।।

puṣpaṃ pragamanaṃ vajramupanyāsopasarpaṇam| pañcāvaśyamathāṅgāni pratimukhaiḥ trayodaśa||47||

Puṣpa, Pragamana, Vajra, Upanyāsa, Upasarpaṇa are other five parts making it total of thirteen parts which are essential in Pratimukha Sandhi.


विलासो नृस्त्रियोरीहा धूननं साम्न्यनादरः। रोधोऽर्तिः सान्त्वनं साम पात्रौघो वर्णसंहृतिः।।४८।।

vilāso nṛstriyorīhā dhūnanaṃ sāmnyanādaraḥ| rodho’rtiḥ sāntvanaṃ sāma pātraugho varṇasaṃhṛtiḥ||48||

Vilāsa is the romance of man and woman, Dhūnana is disrespect towards equals, Rodha is the frustration, consolation is the Sāntvana, coming together of the main characters is the Varṇasaṃhṛti.


क्रीडायै हसनं नर्म दोषावृतौ तु तद्द्युतिः। आपायदर्शनं तापः पुष्पं वाक्यं विशेषवत्।।४९।।

krīḍāyai hasanaṃ narma doṣāvṛtau tu taddyutiḥ| āpāyadarśanaṃ tāpaḥ puṣpaṃ vākyaṃ viśeṣavat||49||

Laughter for the sake of sport Narma, Narmadyuti is the laughter to hide some faults, Tāpa is to meet some pain, Puṣpa speaks in an extraordinary manner.


प्रगमः प्रतिवाक्-श्रेणिः वज्रं प्रत्यक्षकर्कशम्। उपपत्तिरुपन्यासः नष्टेष्टेहाऽनुसर्पणम्।।५०।।

pragamaḥ prativāk-śreṇiḥ vajraṃ pratyakṣakarkaśam| upapattirupanyāsaḥ naṣṭeṣṭehā’nusarpaṇam||50||

Pragama is debate, cruel remarks on one's face are called Vajra, argument is Upanyāsa, loss of the desire of the earlier wanted goal is Anusarpaṇa
